Mapping population distributions on city level, using Twitter data

Summary

This project visualises population distributions in cities worldwide with using Twitter data. Organised by residents and tourists, the project develops innovative infographics that help to better understand how intertwined the everyday life of residents and short-term visitors is. The project is supported by the company “MapBox”, providing automatically updated maps enabled by artificial intelligence algorithms.

Results

The project effectively illustrates how Twitter data can be used as innovative data source to visualise the distribution of residents and tourists in cities worldwide. It analysed 3 billion Tweets and presented infographics for 29 cities, reflecting their geographic distribution of residents and tourists. Overall, this project is a useful approach for producing visual infographics of city populations worldwide based on Twitter data, and potentially it can be replicated with other social media data as well, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
