Over recent years, African nationals have been travelling through the Central Mediterranean Route (CMR) for diverse and multiple reasons, ranging from lack of economic opportunities, poor governance, livelihood stressors, violence and human rights violations. Migratory journeys across the Mediterranean to the southern shores of the EU have attracted much political and media attention and polarized debates across the EU.

Over the last decade, crossing the Central Mediterranean has become one of the deadliest journeys in the world for migrants, with at least 15,000 migrants having died on this route since 2014. The vast majority of bodies found are not identified, with net identification rates of migrant bodies around 22 per cent between 1990 and 2013.

This paper presents outcomes from a Regional Workshop on the Use of Mobile Phone Data for Official Statistics, hosted by BPS Indonesia in conjunction with UN ESCAP, UN DESA, Pulse Lab Jakarta and the UN Global Working Group on Big Data for Official Statistics.
