Data2X Big Data and Gender Brief Series: Gender Gaps in Urban Mobility
This series from Data2X features research examining insights from big data on women and girls. The 2-page briefs cover a variety of topics including how big data can highlight gendered urban mobility, educational inequalities, and women’s financial inclusion.
The briefs summarize the main findings and implications of each of the 10 projects funded through the Big Data and Gender Challenge, which aimed to apply big data innovations to fill gender data gaps and improve understanding on key aspects of girls’ and women’s lives.
This project, undertaken by The GovLab, UNICEF, Universidad Del Desarrollo, Telefónica R&D Center, ISI Foundation, and DigitalGlobe used mobile phone records to examine the gendered aspects of mobility in Chile, and concluded that this data can help policymakers design more gender-inclusive urban transport systems.
New briefs will continue to be added throughout October 2019.
