Measuring Internal Migration around the Globe: A Comparative Analysis
The working paper reviews available data sources and methods for tracking internal migration, and explains the need for comparative studies in internal migration. Bell and Charles use data from the IMAGE project (Internal Migration Around the Globe) to try and fill this gap, in so doing simultaneously offering a methodology for contrasting internal migratory trends between countries and highlighting deficiencies of available data and its variances among the countries being compared. The article is thus a call for a streamlining of national data collection methods in order to improve comparative studies on internal migration and includes suggestions for how data systems might be modified to attain this goal.
