Migration Profiles: Making the Most of the Process

Migration Profiles: Making the Most of the Process

This guide offers concise practical guidance on how to initiate, implement and follow up on a migration profile process in a particular country. Taking stock of the more than 80 country migration profiles (MP) developed by many stakeholders, including the European Commission and IOM, it summarizes how country teams have been organizing the preparatory, implementation and follow-up stages of the MP process.

Migration profiles offer an internationally compatible – yet nationally relevant – framework for monitoring migratory processes against the background of existing regulatory systems, policy frameworks and international cooperation initiatives. In addition to describing migrant stocks and their characteristics, the profiles suggest ways of setting up systems for tracking migratory events over time, as well as piloting methods for evaluating the link between migration and development and assessing the socio-economic impact of migration.

In addition to being a handy report, MPs serve as a capacity-building tool – building the expertise of State actors and other stakeholders to manage migration and development issues in their country, often by enhancing cooperation.
