IOM and the Summit of the Future

In the context of multiple and overlapping crisis, the Summit of the Future, to be held 22 – 23 September 2024 in New York City, will bring world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how to deliver a better present and safeguard the future.

As the world faces major global transformations – from climate change, demographic transition and urbanization to digitalization – human mobility is part of the solution. At the global level, IOM has been actively engaged over recent years in the shaping of the Secretary General’s (SG) Our Common Agenda (OCA) Policy Briefs series, which provide practical recommendations to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation – in manners and structures that reflect the political and economic realities of today – can effectively tackle current challenges as well as those that have emerged in recent years or may yet be over the horizon. At field level, there are abundant examples – through the work IOM and its partners implement – of the powerful force of well-managed migration to meet the challenges of today and those of tomorrow.

IOM is therefore determined to ensure that human mobility is hardwired into the Summit of the Future discussions and outcome. This primer outlines IOM’s positions ahead of the Summit of the Future, as well as a contextual analysis of the relevance of human mobility in relation to the five foreseen chapters of the Pact for the Future. It provides illustrative data points and evidence that supports the positions articulated.
