This indicator visualizes only the deaths and disappearances of migrants that have been categorized at the regional and subregional levels. However, the global figures include the deaths and disappearances of both regionally categorized as well as uncategorized data. Due to the challenges of collecting information about deaths during migration, the true number of fatalities is likely much higher, and the figures should only be viewed as indicative, rather than representative across time or geography.<br>

The data are displayed by UN SD subregion and region because the GPS information for recorded incidents often does not correspond to the territories of individual UN member states. Deaths and disappearances that take place over water are attributed to the region nearest to the body of water where they occurred. However, certain bodies of water, such as the Mediterranean Sea, which borders multiple UN subregions, have associated deaths that are left uncategorized.
