Migration survey sampling: a pragmatic ‘how-to’ guide

Migration survey sampling: a pragmatic ‘how-to’ guide

The choices researchers make about sampling shape the findings and policy implications one can draw about the links between migration and development. The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and MIGNEX, a five-year research project (2018–2023) with researchers at nine institutions in Europe, Africa and Asia, published detailed guidance on how to build a valuable, insightful and reliable survey sample.

In an article by ODI, the institute desribes five key lessons learnt with sampling in the MIGNEX project.

  • Be realistic

  • Innovate

  • Try it out before locking yourself in

  • Do simple, well

  • Don’t rush it
